ALCOHOL AND THE HUMAN LIVER

The need to drink responsibly

The liver can break down around 15ml of alcohol every hour, which is similar to the amount found in a can of beer (335ml). Drinking beyond this level stresses the liver and can result to damaged liver cells, which can cause liver scarring.

Scarring of the liver unfortunately accumulates over time, and there comes a point where there isn’t enough healthy liver tissue left to perform its essential functions. It is therefore not possible to drink heavily over years without damaging one’s liver; the question is rather how much damage can the liver sustain, until it can no longer support the body. Fortunately, early detection of signs of damage can help us make lifestyle changes necessary to stop the damage.
